In a strategic and community focused collaboration under the Safe Drinking Water Project, “It Begins With You” (IBWU) and EnvironFocus have come together to make a lasting impact on communities in the Niger Delta. This joint effort involved funding the acquisition and transportation of LifeStraw Max Membrane Ultrafilters, a cutting-edge solution for ensuring access to clean water in Nigerian hospitals, with particular reference to the 10 Niger Delta, communities .
IBWU Foundation, a not-for-profit organization based in Canada, supported this initiative. Founded by individuals committed to positive community transformation across North America, Europe, and Africa, IBWU is driven by a passion for charity and a shared responsibility for fostering social and community change.
The core focus of this collaborative effort is the deployment of 10 LifeStraw Max units to 10 different hospitals in the Niger Delta region. Each LifeStraw Max unit is a powerful tool that can serve up to 400 people daily. With ten units in place, the project has the potential to provide clean and filtered water to approximately 4,000 people daily across various hospitals in the region.
One remarkable feature of the LifeStraw Max is its capacity to filter up to 180,000 litres of water before requiring a filter cartridge change. This longevity makes it a sustainable and cost-effective solution for communities facing water scarcity challenges. The ultrafilters are designed to remove viruses, bacteria, parasites, microplastics, and chemical contaminants like lead and chlorine. The result is not just access to water but access to water that meets the highest safety and cleanliness standards.
The significance of this project is magnified in the Niger Delta, an ecologically rich yet economically challenged region. Access to clean water is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of public health. By addressing this need in hospitals, the project goes beyond immediate relief, contributing to communities’ long-term well-being and resilience. IBWU’s involvement in this project reflects its mission and values, rooted in the belief that positive change begins with individual actions. By partnering with communities, IBWU strives to encourage social and community responsibility, a philosophy perfectly aligned with the goals of the Safe Drinking Water Project.
As the LifeStraw Max units find their place in Nigerian hospitals, the collaboration between IBWU and EnvironFocus, cannot be understated as it offers a beacon of hope to the people in these communities. This collaboration demonstrates how organizations with a shared vision can create meaningful change which ripples through communities, impacting the lives of thousands. This endeavour is not just about providing clean water; it’s about instigating positive transformations that echo the ethos of “It Begins With You.”
This collaboration also meets 3 of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals namely: Goal 3: Good Health & Wellbeing, Goal 6: Clean Water & Sanitation & Goal 17: Partnership for the goals.
